A view from Pier gap to Pier Avenue, this picture shows The Royal Hotel on the right hand side built in 1872. The large gable ended building on the right side of the Ave was the public hall, which was burned down just before the Second World War.

This photo is looking down Pier Gap it dates from the early 1920`s In the background you can see the Belle steamer. Also the  pavilion at the end of the pier, built over 100 years ago. In the 1930`s shows were moved to its upstairs which was known as the Jolly Roger.

Looking from The Jolly Roger along the pier at the town. This photo dates from around the 1920`s, just before it was bought by the Kingsman family. It was not long before the pier was enlarged, and with new amusements came the holiday crowds of the 1930`s

The pier Approach and bridge. The Bridge  was built around 1913 before this there were shops on  each side of the gap.  Also around the same time the Bandstand was underway. The project was designed by Council Surveyor Daniel Bowe. The scheme was opened in May 1914 by the Sheriff of the City of London.

This photo dates from about 1914 when crowds flock to the pier to use the hot and cold sea water baths which were on each side of the pier gents on the left, and ladies on the right. In the background you can see the Pavilion theatre, and just to the right the paddle steamer Belle, which was one of the paddle steamers that came to Clacton the other was the Koh-i-Nor, the most luxurious of the two.

This photo of Gt. Clacton dates from the turn of the Century. Known now as St. Johns Road, these small cottages that once housed local grocers and drapers have all been replaced by the now present row of modern shops. In the background you can see St, Johns Church, Built in the early 12th century by Richard de Belmeis, Bishop of London.

Pier Avenue, junction Station Road, Clacton Around 1903, the shops behind the trees is Grimwade & Clarke, for some eighty years there remained on this spot, only to be demolished in 1984 to make way for McDonalds.

The foundation stone to Clacton's railway station was laid in 1880, but there were no trains for another two years.
