ILB D-107   1966 - 1978

D-107 was launched at 12:00Hrs on August 11th 1970, after the Coastguard had reported that a speedboat was going around in circles, one mile off Clacton Pier. As there was a possibility that the driver was still on board, perhaps unconscious, the lifeboat went out to check. On the way out they came across a pleasure boat, which had picked up the speedboat's driver and he was taken aboard the ILB. There was a very considerable danger that the run away boat could hit other craft in the area, or bathers in the water and so the chase began to catch it. Eventually using a boathook and manoeuvring at over 20 knots, the ILB got close enough to the speedboat for one of the lifeboatmen to lean over and knock the boat's gear lever into neutral, and the driver was put back on board again.

Clacton's D-Class Lifeboat D-302

The D-Class Lifeboat made of nylon coated with neoprene-hypalon. With a crew of two or three and a length of 4.9mts (16 feet) its launched from a trailer, with a speed of around 20 knots and an endurance of 3Hrs at maximum speed. Powered by a 40hp o/b engine. This class of Lifeboat was introduced in 1963. Although this Lifeboat is not used at night it is an ideal boat for close in work around the rocks and under the pier. The D-Class Lifeboat in Clacton is on station all year round and is launched from the west promenade.
