Girl in Sea

The Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched shortly after 5pm when a report was received of someone seen to jump form the sea wall near the pier. It was high tide and the on-shore wind was gusting to force nine. After making only about four hundred yards out to sea, it was obvious to the crew that conditions made any kind of rescue impossible. The lifeboat returned to shore where it was driven onto the beach, a normal trailer recovery being too dangerous to attempt.

Senior helmsman, Tim Dye, said it was the worst conditions he had ever experienced and would have endangered the lives of the crew had they continued.

It turned out that the girl had jumped down onto some rocks, and was never in any danger.

The lifeboat was recovered using the beached recovery method, something the crew had only practiced previously, and was back on station at 5.30pm.

Capsized Jet Ski

The Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched at 4.30pm on 15th September to a capsized jet ski off Lion Point, Jaywick. Three people were in the water, two adults and a ten year old boy. It is thought one of the adults had swum out from the shore to give assistance. They were brought ashore at Lion Point, the lifeboat crew requesting an ambulance for the youngster who was showing signs of hypothermia. They were met by the Coastguards who took control awaiting the arrival of medical attention.

The lifeboat was back on station at 5.40pm.

Engine Fire

The Atlantic 75 launched at 12.55pm on the 9th September to the 36 foot motor cruiser “Great Dane” which had reported a fire in it’s engine bay. The cruiser had dropped anchor in the area of the North East Maplin buoy about ten miles south south-east of Clacton. On arrival at the vessel the crew found the fire had been extinguished by the three people on board and a check was carried-out to make sure it was ok to restart the engines. The vessel was on passage to Southend and the Atlantic 75 lifeboat from Burnham-on-Crouch arrived to escort her for part of the way and Southend lifeboat was asked to take over the last part of the trip. The Clacton boat was back on station at 14.20pm.

Yacht “Graylag”

The Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched on 5th September at 1120am after a mayday report was received from the 30 foot yacht “Graylag” which had run aground on the Buxey Sand, four and a half miles south of Point Clear. The vessel was well aground and could not be pulled free. The Tyne class lifeboat from Walton was also called and a woman crew member from the yacht was transferred by the Clacton boat to the larger lifeboat. With the tide still falling both lifeboats stood by until the flood tide was sufficient for the Walton boat to pull the yacht into deeper water and tow her into Bradwell. The Clacton boat was back on station at 3pm.

One of the crew on the Clacton boat was Jenny Neal. This will probably be her last rescue as she is joining the Royal Navy. For the last few years Jenny has been a much valued member of the crew, and she will be greatly missed.

Jump from pier ends in tragedy

Both lifeboats based at Clacton launched at 6.35pm on Saturday 7th July after five men were seen jumping into the sea from the west side of the town’s pier. Two managed to swim ashore, one was floundering in the water and was picked-up by the “D” class lifeboat. Coastguards on the beach then directed the Atlantic 75 lifeboat to the east side of the pier where the other two men had been swept by the strong current. On reaching them both were floating in the water and unconscious. They were lifted aboard the lifeboat where resuscitation was given while they were taken to the beach where paramedics were waiting.

The air-sea rescue helicopter landed on the beach and both men were taken to Colchester General Hospital. One was pronounced dead on arrival and the other remains in intensive care.

The high tide was about three-quarters of an hour before the incident and was running quite fast, the water was very cold,

Sinking speedboat

Clacton’s Atlantic 75 lifeboat launched at 5pm after a report was received by the coastguards that a speedboat was taking water one mile south of the pier. After carrying out a search of the area the crew were informed that the casualty was off Walton pier and the Frinton and Walton lifeboat was on its way. The one person on board the sinking boat was taken off by helicopter and landed on the beach, meanwhile the lifeboat managed to get a tow line attached and towed the speedboat to the town breakwater where it was put on a trailer.

The Clacton boat was back on station at 6pm.

 Drifting Dinghy

A report was received by the coastguard of a drifting dinghy near the Knowl buoy, two and a half miles south-east of Colne Point, which may have had two people on board. Both Clacton lifeboats were launched at 6.30am on Saturday 03 February 2007 and were joined by the Frinton and Walton lifeboat and a Sea King search and rescue helicopter.

The dinghy was sighted half a mile south of the Knowl, and found to contain two life jackets.

An extensive search of the Blackwater estuary and St Peters flats was carried out, and coastguard mobile units searched the shore. Nothing was found. It is thought the dinghy may have been left on the beach and had been washed out to sea by the high tide during the night.

The lifeboats were back on station at 10am. Sea state – calm. Visibility – excellent.
