Father Christmas

 

On Sunday 21st December Father Christmas made his annual visit to the Clacton lifeboat station. He arrived in the Atlantic 75 lifeboat on the West Beach to be greeted by a small crowd which had gathered at the inshore boathouse on the Western promenade. There he meet about thirty children who had come to tell him their Christmas wishes, and gave each one a small gift.

Christmas Market

Clacton lifeboat once again had a gift stall at the TCVS Christmas Market held in the Princes Theatre on Saturday 22nd of November raising the sum of £476.10. This is the second highest amount ever taken at this event, and seems to reflect the more central position of the stall this year.
The temporary gift shop set up in Smiths Service Centre in Orwell Road until Christmas Eve is running very well, and averaging £225 each week.

Father Christmas

Once again Father Christmas will be paying his annual visit to the Clacton lifeboat station to meet his many young friends. He will arrive on the West beach in the lifeboat at 11am on Sunday the 21st of December and will be in the inshore boathouse on the Western Promenade for about an hour. He will have a small gift for each of the children who come along, and refreshments will be available for those too old to sit on his knee.

We look forward to seeing you and hope the weather is kind to us.

Race Night

The Clacton-on-Sea branch held its annual Horse Race Night on Saturday  at Highfields Holiday Park and raised £1400 for the Lifeboats. One hundred and forty punters enjoyed a sausage and chip supper followed by nine races. The evenings raffle was well supported with twentyone prizes, many donated by local businesses. Thanks to everyone for making this another successful night.

Gift shop

The Clacton-on-Sea R.N.L.I. gift shop will be opening in the town in the run-up to Christmas. It will be in Smiths Service Centre in Orwell Road from the first week of November until Christmas Eve, opening from 11am until 4pm with early closing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The usual range of gifts will be on offer including calendars, diaries and Xmas cards.

Horse Race Night

The Clacton-on-Sea branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is holding it’s annual horse race night on Saturday 22nd of November 2003 at the Dolphin Suite, Highfields Holiday Park, Clacton. The evening starts at 7.30pm with a sausage and chip supper, the first race starting at 8.15. Tickets are £6 and can be obtained from 01255 851818 before the 15th of November.

125th Anniversary Supper

Thirtyeight members of the Clacton branch of the R.N.L.I. met on Friday the 12th of September to celebrate the 125th aniversary of the lifeboats in Clacton. They enjoyed a meal at Jackals resturant in the town where they were well looked after by John and his staff. The evening was arranged by branch vice-chairman David Porter who is seen drawing the raffle.

Boathouse Visit

 

Five visitors from Sri Lanka were given a tour of the Clacton-on-Sea lifeboat house on the pier as guests of the Rotary Club. They are in the area on a group study exchange program lasting five weeks, where they will be shown working practices in their own fields and experience a little of the British culture. They are staying with members of 1240 District of the Rotary Clubs which covers Essex.

The exchange program has been running for some time, and people from this area will be going to Sri Lanka as guests of the 3220 District which covers the whole island.

Digging Deep

12 members of staff at Reg’s fish and chip shop in Ravensdale, Great Clacton, dug behind their sofa cushions and came up with £79.14. Shane Morrison, shop manager, said “Its surprising how much money you can have in the home, and not know its there”.

Shop owner, Tim Skinner told staff that whatever they  found would be matched by the management, and a cheque for £158.28 was presented to boathouse visitors supervisor Stan Bench.

Flag Day

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution street collection held in Clacton on 26th of July raised £1,081.95. When this is added to the amount collected from schools and churches the total comes to £1,906.88. Many thanks to everyone who made this year another success.

Winning balloon travels 140Kms

 

The winning entrant in the R.N.L.I balloon race held during open week-end on 12th and 13th of July travelled across the Channel to the town of Killem on the French/Belgium border, a distance of 140Kms. The balloon was bought by Mrs Ellis of Clacton who wins the £25 prize. The person who returned the winning tag receives a £5 reward.

131 people took part in the race, with other balloons reaching Dunkirk in France and Brockdish near Bungay in Norfolk.

Naming ceremony of the “D” class lifeboat “Seahorse 11

Exactly 125 years to the day since the first Clacton lifeboat the “Albert Edward” was named, the stations latest lifeboat the “D” class “Seahorse 11” was given the honours. Mr Graham Crame, President of the Clacton Station branch opened the proceedings saying how the Institute and its vessels had changed in the 125 years as had the type of rescues we were called upon to carry out.

Mr Simon Crane, representing the donors, then handed the lifeboat to the R.N.L.I.

Lord Howe, a member of the R.N.L.I. council, accepted the boat on behalf of the Institution, and handed it to the Clacton Station.

 

Mr Rob Smith, Honorary Secretary, accepted the boat on behalf of the Clacton Station.
A service of dedication then followed, conducted by the Rev Guy Thorburn of St Johns Church, Great Clacton, the Station Chaplain.
The lifeboat was then named by Mrs Bernadette Law, representing the donors, “Seahorse 11”
The lifeboat was then launched to give a demonstration to the 130 guests of the Station.

Lifeboat Open Days

Clacton lifeboat opened its doors to visitors over the weekend of 12th and 13th of July. About 350 people were shown round the boathouse looking at the stations history and learning about the Atlantic 75 and “D” class boats which Clacton operates. This year is our 125th anniversary, and to celebrate a balloon race was held from the pier. 130 balloons were sold and the prize of £25 will go to the one which has travelled the greatest distance and had its label returned by the 2nd of August. This was a most successful weekend made more enjoyable by the wonderful weather.

Lifeboat Open Weekend

The Clacton-on-Sea branch of the  Royal National Lifeboat Institution is holding its open weekend on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of July. The boathouse on the pier will be open from 11am until 4pm where visitors can see the lifeboat close-up and view some of the stations history. Clacton has had a lifeboat for 125 years and to celebrate this anniversary a balloon race will be held over the weekend.

Queens Golden Jubilee Medal

Eight members of the Clacton lifeboat have received the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal. John Lineen-station medical officer, Rob Bradbrook, Tim Sutton, Ian Mantrip, Patsy Shiners, Tim Dye, Roger Johnson and Rob Smith were presented with their awards by Jayne Parsons, R.N.L.I. Eastern region area organiser at this years branch A.G.M.

Students visit Clacton lifeboat

 

Thirty-one post graduate students from Essex University were guests of the Clacton Rotary Club on Tuesday evening. Coming from sixteen different countries, the club tries to give them an idea of life in Great Britain while they are studying. Their evening started with a visit to the lifeboat on Clacton pier, where they were given a short talk by Richard Walker from the local R.N.L.I. branch before being shown around the boathouse. They went on to Jackals restaurant for a buffet supper.

Royal Bank of Scotland rewards Lifeboat treasurer.

 

Local Royal National Lifeboat Institution branch treasurer Debbie Holmes of Clacton’s NatWest bank has  received a £250 award for the Lifeboats. The Royal bank of Scotland operates a Community Cashback scheme which rewards their employees who do voluntary work with a donation to the organisation they support. This is the fourth time Debbie has been given the award for the R.N.L.I.

Volunteers Wanted

The Clacton branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is looking for volunteers to help in its gift shop on the pier. The shop opens from May to October for about five hours each day. If you are interested in helping for even a few hours a week please call the shop manager Roger on 01255 428833, who will be pleased to talk to you.

Tour-de-Tendring

Kevin Britton of Britton Construction, sponsors of this years "Tour-de-Tendring" cycle event, gets a helping hand when the event was launched on Monday 28th of April. Representitives of Tendring District Council, organisers of the Tour, and the R.N.L.I, were on Clacton pier to watch the lifeboat launch on exercise and recover two crewmen who voluntered to act as casualties. The Tour supports the R.N.L.I. and local youth sports initiatives.

This years event takes place on Sunday 18th of May, and entry forms are available from Leisure Services on 01255 253208.

Tom Peppers Fund Raising

On Easter Sunday, Tom Peppers on Clacton's seafront once again held a fund-raising day for the local lifeboats. A grand total of £1550.00 was collected. Many thanks to all the staff and all who contributed.

Easter Fund-raiser for the Lifeboats

Members of staff at Bard Ltd of Valleybridge Road, Clacton, found a seasonal way of helping the local lifeboat when three of them dressed in Easter costumes to collect donations from their fellow workers. Each year the company gives out Easter eggs to all its employees, and this year they were asked to make a contribution to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. A grand total of £201 was raised, £46 of which came from Margaret Lee who has friends at Bards and had filled a large bottle with small change. Many thanks to all who took part.

Essex Police Band

The Essex Police Band will be giving their annual concert at the Westcliff Theatre on Sunday 13th April 2003. The evening has once again been organised by George and Phyllis Constable and will be their eighth. Tickets are on sale at the box-office priced £6.

Ted Oliver re-visits Boathouse after 66 years

On Sunday 9th of March, Clacton lifeboat station was visited by Ted Oliver 66 years after being rescued by the lifeboat. On the 5th of October 1936, he and five companions had bought a fishing smack-the Arco-from Rochester in Kent and were sailing her to Maldon when they were caught in a gale off Clacton. Their sails were blown out and they were driven on to the Buxey Sands. As a distress signal they soaked a blanket in parafin and set light to it. They were seen by coastguards at Clacton and the lifeboat was launched, taking the vessel and its crew to Brightlingsea..

Ted, now aged 88, was shown round the boathouse by Station Hon Sec Rob Smith, and watched the current lifeboat launch on exercise. He was presented with a picture of  Clacton’s two lifeboats signed by the crew.

 London marathon  

Local marathon runner Jan Topolewski from Wivenhoe is taking part in this years London marathon in April in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. He is busy looking for sponsors, and was delighted to receive a generous donation from Cherrytree Garage of Mersey Road, Colchester, and Elmtree Garages of Elmstead and Clacton. Group Managing Director Carmel Button said “we have known Jan as a customer for some time, and are happy to support him in such a good cause”.

London marathon

Two local marathon runners will be raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution by taking part in this years event in April. John Gibson from Clacton and Jan Topolewski from Wivenhoe are busy training and getting sponsorship for the 26 mile race.

The two runners paid a visit to Clacton lifeboat station on Sunday 23rd Feb to meet the local crew and have a tour of  the boathouse.
